Nice review.

The film is still standing, only the CG has gotten a nice blow in the meantime. Also difficult since nowadays there is a real sci-fi boom going on, which emphasizes the difference even more. But Besson aims a bit too much for wow effects with gritty CG scenes, something that just doesn't work anymore almost 20 years later.

But otherwise very nice pastiche. The film is overflowing with references, but also manages to create its own iconic scenes. For example, the opera scene is a gem and with Tucker (admittedly, not for everyone) and Oldman you get two actors who really know how to play memorable roles. And what the film honors, it honors in such a way that something is always added to the original.

Mno, Besson has made a very nice movie with this Fifth Element. It's a shame he hasn't played more on aesthetics visually, but apart from that it remains a very nice and loose 2 hours of space opera with a big wink. Still half off, but then there are still 4 full stars.

4.0* and a extended review

I'm not a big fan of Besson, but if it's a good movie, I'll admit it. Of course I still have a lot to see from him but Lucy and Valerian are two films I have not finished watching. Now I want to give Lucy another chance. About Valerian I can safely say that the two protagonists have no chemistry at all and act badly. In this film the acting is not always great and Ruby Rodh is completely over-the-top. Still, it's a fun movie. In the end it might all go a little too fast for a movie like this. The worldbuilding is minimal but not too disturbing.

Cool and highly entertaining film in an extravagant guise. Typical Luc Besson splurge.

What immediately strikes me is that the film is over 20 years old but the computer animation and sci-fi world in it still looks great to me. The film must have cost a lot of money. A not too serious story is placed in a rather nice and especially busy future image with a lot of weird and special characters. One of the few regulars is Bruce Willis who plays his part on his Willis, the usual and sympathetic willy-nilly hero. Furthermore, Holm, of course Jovovich, and a row of unusual and eccentric appearances stand out. From a rapper who often works with Massive Attack, Besson's wife and, for example, the terrible nerve that Willis tries to attack in his own house. Particularly funny scene, by the way, and of that kind of little moments and weird figures, the film is full and makes the film very entertaining in a not too serious and nicely edited whole.

The film also relies mainly on its decoration, is very colorful, has excellent music and only with that reverberation of the Diva, his wife by the way, does Besson seem to be overplaying his hand a bit. Furthermore, a coast and a spa of beautiful women with Jovovich who is downright titillating and cute, Maylam, Sophia Goth, Eve Salvail and Sibyl Buck. Willis great in his role, Jovovich too, Creed-Miles funny and Tucker almost hilarious. Is it only sunshine that shines? No...Lister as president is a terrible choice and Oldman, otherwise always convincing, overplays his hand to the annoying with the weird accent he speaks. Very mediocre as far as I'm concerned for Oldman's doing.

Wonderful entertainment, visually overwhelming, otherwise a lot of humor, it all balances a bit on the edge of error, but that is exactly what gives the film its charm. Always nice to do something.
