Oh dear.

Still a disappointment in the disaster film genre. Mainly because I really like watching the genre, but then I mainly do it for the major destruction. Unfortunately, they were almost minimal in this film, unfortunately.

It is remarkable if you look at the budget, how little Amiel seems to have done with it. Everything looks really lousy, say SyFy level. And considering the budget I will even say one more level below. Anyway, if the film had focused more on destruction, I would have overlooked that a bit.

The film is mainly kept afloat by some nicer scenes and the cast. Eckhart tries to make the best of it, for example. Tucci (didn't recognize him), Lindo and Qualls are also just fine. Swank a little less, and that had mainly to do with her role.

It's all a bit simple really. How easily they can pull off such a bizarre idea is quite remarkable and a bit lazily written. It goes too smoothly, and too simple of course. We also encounter all the disaster clichés that there are.

Some scenes are still okay by the way, Golden Gate Bridge destruction for example. But in general for a disaster movie, the movie focuses surprisingly much on the "astronauts" underground, mixed with bad effects. often not too much tension.

They really should have just found another team for this project, because that just shows that with the wrong team, a film will come out that falls short in all areas (except for acting). Especially the effects really should have been better. But yeah.

Well, I'm not really a big fan of disaster movies, but I like to watch them every now and then. It is for the devastation and total chaos, but also for the building tension of fear and disbelief of what is to come. So feel free to call me a disaster tourist.

In terms of content, disaster films often represent little or no value. Often it concerns - arguing or not - families that are heroically rescued out of pure love and one plot is already a bit stranger than the other. The first is not the case here. The film is pretty straight forward with the problem statement, the solution and the crew that will solve it. So no subplots of families and families.

The film looks more like a space expedition, were it not for the fact that they bore themselves into the ground and I take that both literally and figuratively. Very lame and almost laughable developments of something that is even posited in the film as totally unrealistic, only to go for it ten minutes later with full faith ...

CGI quite mediocre, disaster itself quite limited in view, although the Golden Gate still had something, but that was visually destroyed by the lousy exploding Colosseum. Furthermore, the usual clichés of members who die one by one. No, among the disaster movies one of the weakest I've ever seen. Unfortunately.
