Ryan O'Neal starred in some excellent films in the 1970s, including 'Paper Moon' and 'Barry Lyndon' before his career pretty much went under with dragons from films like 'Oliver's Story' and 'Pardners' . In The Driver we see O'Neal at his best: cool, attractive and a master of understatement. He plays The Driver, who earns a fortune as a driver in a series of robberies, and who - much to The Detective's [Bruce Dern]'s frustration - always manages to ensure that there is insufficient evidence to prosecute him. However, the crafty detective decides to use a couple of busted robbers as bait, hoping to trap The Driver and put him behind bars for good.

The story is simple, the screenplay intelligent and Dern's portrayal as the crafty cop who doesn't shy away from any means to get his way is sublime. His confrontations with O'Neal are beautiful, but it is the chases and the accompanying car stunts (old school, so without CGI) that are the absolute highlights. This film can compete in that area with 'Bullit', 'The French Connection' and 'The Seven-Ups' and is therefore particularly recommended for fans of the better car chases. A very enjoyable movie!

With Bullitt and French connection, the chase is firmly embedded in the whole story and thus gives an extra accent, where you are really on the edge of your seat. This is where things are turned around: a fairly weak story serves as a peg to hang a number of chases on it, and I don't think that really works.

The confrontations between Dern and O'Neal can therefore not really be called "sizzling": a bit of filling actually with a lot of over-acting and weak one-liners. Eventually goes out like a night candle.

After just seeing Adjani in Possession she has it easier here.. No actor has a hard time here, simple characters and a simple story that revolves around the action and the car chases.

Dern plays a nice colorful role, a bit nonsensical though. O'Neal acts weak and does not convince.
