less in my opinion than the original avengers; but still a very nice adaptation. I think it's a shame that there are so many more action scenes here.

Never heard of the original series until my father (58 years old) came up with this movie. They were able to snare big names (Ralph Phiennes and Sean Connery), but I soon learned that those names were optical illusions. I just had to sit back and enjoy the wonderfully dry British humor that was certainly not avoided (surprisingly, by the way that I now find out that a Canadian is responsible for this production and not an Englishman). The story and the special effects didn't exactly make your mouth water. Ralph Phiennes tried his best, but I think I'll appreciate his acting more when I watch the series because I can't compare it to anything now. Connory was a big disappointment to me. With someone with such a track record, you just set the bar pretty high, but after half an hour after his introduction in the film, I also put this prognosis behind me. The humor here is so easy, it's starting to rub against the grain. It did help, because in combination with the not too difficult plot it is a nice look away film. That's why I find it surprising, but not incomprehensible that he is rated so low here on MovieMeter. Because the film was sometimes a bit too messy and often deviated from the story. Too bad, but maybe the series will change my mind.

As a fan of the series, this is not recommended, as has already been made quite clear here

Where the original series had its heyday in the mid-1960s, at first quite serious, but later more as a kind of absurdist spies pastiche, in beautiful style with the unsurpassed, subtly playing Patrick McNee as a classic-looking gentleman and the feline Diana Rigg who as Emma Peel was one of the first "strong" women on TV.

This film attempts to approach that tongue-in-cheek pastiche, but that is very difficult and it fails hopelessly. I understand that the film has also been drastically shortened so that the story no longer flows at all, but I also don't think a "Directors Cut" with the cut scenes added back would really do it much better.

The acting isn't great either, despite my deep respect for Connery, Fiennes and Thurman. Given the abilities of those three, I fear that the very poor script and the director, Chechik, are to blame. Either way, they don't save the movie.

With humor, timing is important, and too often that timing just isn't right. The camera work isn't that great either. Certainly not enough, it could have been so much more with a better script and, quite frankly, a better director.
