Pretty interesting.

At least I wouldn't have looked for Anderson. In Hollywood, he mainly makes very commercial (but slick) action vehicles, this is a somewhat rougher film about a bunch of idlers. The only problem might be that Anderson doesn't put much direction into his film.

Not really going anywhere. Law, Frost and Pertwee are too unpleasant, but the police are also portrayed as pathetic. So you're looking at both sides without really having a favourite. There is also not much message to be found, not necessarily of course, but given the theme a bit strange.

You can perhaps see this film as the spiritual predecessor of Trainspotting, partly thanks to the good soundtrack (Orbital's Halcyon ), but Boyle does much more with his film. Shopping is a nice first attempt by Anderson where he shows his talent, but also falls short for a film of this type.

3.0*

I actually agree from A to Z with my predecessor. Funny to see this debut film now after I had already watched all other films by this director : Event horizon, Resident evil, The three musketeers and Pompeii weren't exactly milestones of social commentary, so it's curious to suddenly be confronted here with something like an attempt to interpret a nihilistic life. But it's not bad at all, Jude Law has a good intensity, the beautiful Sadie Frost isn't bad either (although she reminds me of Bananarama from time to time), the ending is the only thing possible, and the soundtrack is very strong. Hey, I'm talking to Onderhond again.

I would have liked to have given that movie more but alas... it's a weak script. Visually, Anderson manages to make something of it with the dingy street scene, the nightly settings and an early 90s image seasoned with grunge, hip-hop and beats. The two main characters, two vandals and thieves, are annoying and superficial. There are many middle fingers in the air and the rest of the world are just "wankers", but where is the social breeding ground for their actions? We know from Billy that his father kicked him out. From Jo it's all even more vague. Both have a kind of "no future" attitude. By not understanding them I didn't care much either

Their hobby : shopping! Shopping is stealing a car and then driving that car into a store and stealing things. Three crimes in one fell swoop. Just for kicks. Those who watch until the end will eventually notice that the film itself does not have much sympathy with its characters. I thought it was the only appropriate ending.

Some big names graced the bill with Sean Bean, Marianne Faithful and Jonathan Pryce, but they had to make do with small roles. For Jude Law that was his debut and with his co-star Sadie Frost he formed a couple for ten years. I expected much more from this.
