The Split plot

"No wonder they're happy. They just stole a half-million dollars in front of a hundred-thousand witnesses... But watch what happens when it's time for The Split!"

A band of thugs plans a heist at a football stadium's greenhouse with a large loot waiting for them. The carefully planned venture goes smoothly, but instead, dramas ensue around the half-million looted afterwards.

A well-made caper movie with a strong cast, including quite a few familiar names. The structure isn't exactly new: a brief introduction to the team members, the preparations, the heist itself, and the final twist. But it's an easy watch, and the scenes in a packed football stadium look good.

It's nice to see so many familiar names in this unknown film (including Ernest Borgnine)

and they all come across well. The film is not special, but thanks to the good acting and a

attractive progression makes the film worth watching.

A year before Riot (1969), Jim Brown and Gene Hackman collaborated on this film, and a year before that, Brown and Donald Sutherland were in The Dirty Dozen. Just to let you know, it's been quite a while. I was about two when this film came out.

The best part, by far, about ticking off all the films GeneHackman has worked on is finding these kinds of gems. This film seems like the original of all those deadly dull Ocean's movies—but this one has a decent story, believable characters, a good narrative, and a great soundtrack. Much more worthwhile than all the talentless copies that were made later.

Perhaps the strongest point is Quincy Jones's superb soundtrack. It's not quite Blaxploitation, but the atmosphere comes close—and besides that, the whole film just works. It's right, it's vibrant, it has a purpose.
