A dragon of a movie. The special effects are good, but that's about all. Furthermore, it is a sentimental, patriotic mush of improbabilities. With a lot of pain and effort I made it to the end. A let down for this top director...

Lame.

Brian De Palma, not a bad director in my humble opinion, makes Mission to Mars a mess. The end result falls between a failed space adventure and pretentious nonsense. They don't really seem to be able to pick a side. In any case, it's a very cheesy movie. From the side plots to the grandiose failed ending.

The acting is very mediocre across the board, De Palma's direction doesn't really come to life either. Mars may be a rewarding planet to unpack visually, but it is portrayed too clinically. The long takes, which I actually like, regularly lead to… nothing. It's never really exciting. The film fails too often. The fact that the effects are now on the dated side is ultimately a minor issue. Too bad, because my expectations were higher.
