“There is a time for diplomacy and a time for action. Diplomacy is dead.”

Great action movie. After the strong start, the film has trouble maintaining that level, and the makers have also devised a meager plot around all the action scenes. Not a wise choice, because Kiss of the Dragon is at its best when Jet Li is allowed to show his fighting skills. Bridget Fonda acts strong, but her subplot hangs a bit and is poorly developed. Tchéky Karyo is always a nice bad guy.

Kiss of the dragon is a great action movie. Nowhere has the intention been created that it should be a topper. As a mediocre film, this production can handle it just fine.

Unpretentious kung fu with the setting of corrupt Paris, where a shady detective earns a lot of money as a pimp and Mr Li soon has to fight against his will and thanks for his life.

Nice for once, have to say that it was a little less liked in a second turn. It is a film co-written and produced by Luc Besson and his touch can be recognized, also by the presence of the two very blond acrobatic Twins. The writer of the Karate Kid movies also contributed to the script. It's a cartoonish display in both the over the top fight scenes and the story, with villains for whom a human life is really worth nothing, except to exploit. Karyo does quite well as the extraordinarily filthy villain. The meeting between hooker Fonda (who only gets hotter when she's this vulgar) and agent Li is really coincidental and a weakness in the script. The action scenes are smooth and fine and everything clearly serves as a vehicle for that. The playing time is exemplary, nowadays they can no longer keep up with action films in that respect. Still, it feels a bit rushed at the end.

The soundtrack is less. I have no problem with hip hop, I grew up with it. But there are no great rap songs, a huge difference with, for example, Office Space.

That acupuncture gimmick is nice. Jet Li is a very fast, athletic fighter who made important steps towards Hollywood with films like this and The One, but ultimately has remained the star of Chinese productions, of which Hero is possibly the best known and largest in the west. That he was in the Expendables was fun but also a shame because that screams B-status and he could have become the new Bruce Lee...but lacked his unique combination of charisma and humor.
