Favreau proved to be a surprisingly effective director of Iron Man, so it made sense that he would also direct the sequel. This time he also plays the part of Happy Hogan [Jon Favreau], a close friend of Tony Stark [Robert Downey Jr.]. Perhaps that explains why this is a significantly less balanced film than its predecessor. The screenplay, written by Justin Theroux, takes on too much by introducing all kinds of new characters. That is at the expense of Mickey Rourke who, following his monumental comeback in The Wrestler, is memorable as Ivan Vanko, who still has a very personal bone to pick with Iron Man. There is a nice fight scene with Scarlett Johansson, but otherwise this really comes to life when Rourke appears on the screen. And that happens too little.

So far, the revisions of the Marvel series have been fine. This review is also well received.

Robert Downey Jr. is back on top form and really takes this movie to the next level. Just about all dialogues with him are super fast, sharp and never boring for a second.

Although the plot really flies in all directions (literally and figuratively) it never gets boring.

Favreau is steadily expanding the Marvel franchise because we are now introduced to Black Widow for the first time and Rhodes also has a large share in this film.

Mickey Rourke as a villain is underused in my opinion. The highlight is at the Monaco circuit, but especially the end is quite disappointing.

All in all, this film was well worth a review, it was more appealing to me than the first viewing.

Half raise, 3.5*

The Iron Man sequel came pretty quickly with a large part of the cast & crew back on board. It may take some getting used to with the arrival of Don Cheadle, but Terrence Howard was not yet the James Rhodes as we now know him. And especially the arrival of Black Widow ensures the further build-up of the MCU towards Avengers. Robert Downey Jr shows that he really has the role of Iron Man. But figures such as Pepper Potts, Rhodey, Happy and JARVIS have also grown. We do notice the weakness of the MCU here with a weak enemy with Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer. Mickey Rourke isn't special either. The mix of both doesn't really work and you miss the real battle between the hero and the enemy like in the first part.

But the film does provide the necessary action. Jon Favreau once again manages to find the right balance between the action and the accompanying humor. It may not be the pinnacle of the MCU, but it's better than many titles anyway.
