Hellboy II: The Golden Army plot

"Believe it or not... He's the good guy."

An ancient truce between the human kingdom and a much older race of mythical creatures is about to be broken. The exiled Prince Nuada wants to wipe out humanity to make way for the creatures that now have to live in hiding. It's up to Hellboy to stop Nuada before he can awaken the all-destroying Golden Army. Together with a team from the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, including his pyrokinetic girlfriend Liz, the aquatic empathologist Abe and the protoplastic mystic Johann, they shuttle back and forth between the two worlds. Ultimately, Hellboy, a creature not really accepted in either world, will have to choose between his own people or the human world he grew up in.

Even better than the first part, mainly because of more variety of creatures (including Krauss!) and enemies. Nicely created atmosphere all and looks away easily. Hellboy himself is sometimes a bit overly nonchalant and tough, but it's okay, it all fits together. Towards the end it gets nice and industrial-like and the golden army is cool, although I expected a little more from it. Will there be a third part?

In my opinion much more enjoyable than part 1, with a tighter plot and a better climax. A wonderfully modern fairy tale sprung from an imagination that is one of a kind. Visual highlight is the troll market with a collection of creatures worthy of Mézières (unfortunately just RIP ...), but the dramatic highlight is actually very small: the togetherness when Hellboy and Abe go to a drink. However, Abe first refuses the beer that Hellboy offers him: "My body is a temple." Hellboy: "No, it's an amusement park." (Doug Jones is amazing in this movie anyway.)

Weird scene, by the way, when they end up in the Irish caves and meet the Angel of Death there: I immediately and inescapably thought of the Mines of Moria when the Mouth of Sauron would hold court there. Strange that no one pointed out to Del Toro those two similarities.
