B-movie, bad special effects, some bad actors in it, unbelievable events, but I still find it watchable. I used to have this film on videotape and I found it very exciting at the time. That's why I want to give it a pass, but actually this film doesn't deserve that.

A kind of adventure film, which soon loses its credibility.

And that's not the only problem Congo suffers from. The story is simple, but there is almost nothing about it. The acting is pretty below par. Especially Dylan Walsh, who plays some professor, is really laughably bad.

The same goes for the special effects. Some monkeys are so incredibly fake and ugly that it seems as if very little care has been taken with them. That also applies to a few twists in the story, which also come across as forced and far-fetched. But it is in any case impossible to discover logic in this, because it seems to have disappeared after three quarters of the film. Let alone that it gets even a little exciting.

Congo does not have it, is very weak and you never taste the adventure. In fact, it doesn't taste like anything.

Unfortunately. The film starts off quite nice: Bruce Campbell, beautiful locations, a monkey that has learned language... in the middle there is still entertainment but you start to wonder what the already somewhat chemical-free company (of which Ernie Hudson is the most enjoyable) has yet to find each other. The ending goes completely wrong, it's totally rushed, with little impressive monster monkeys and bad effects (a few cringing slow motion scenes and later the lava, where the supposedly intelligent monkeys also voluntarily splash in one after the other...yes, Lemmings was a popular game at the time). Kathleen Kennedy was a producer, would that be it?

As for the normal gorillas (like Amy), they're pretty well done. Yes, these are also not real and for some this was already a turnoff, but I didn't bother with this. Gorillas in the Mist, a much better film, uses a mix of real gorillas and actors in suits.

Dylan Walsh plays well and would later star as a surgeon in the Nip/Tuck series. Laura Linney can be tough but is a bit flat. Tim Curry gets too little to do and remains a caricature.

Soundtrack: conventional and clichéd, with typical tunes and sounds that have an African feel and a bit too sweet at the end.
