Bad Boys II plot

"If you can't stand the heat, get out of Miami."

Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett of the Miami Police Department receive a crucial tip about an important shipment of ecstasy pills from Amsterdam. The trail leads to Cuban nightclub owner Johnny Tapia. He has been suspected of drug smuggling for some time, but so far the police have not been able to substantiate the suspicions. As Mike and Marcus' investigation progresses, they find themselves in a full-scale drug war between rival gangs from the underworld. The two agents must be especially careful as Syd, Marcus' sister, conducts an undercover operation for the National Drug Brigade to bring down Tapia's empire. Caution isn't Mike and Marcus' strong suit, though.

That Bay.

Not quite my thing, these Bad Boys. Because it was finally made by Bay, I took it for an afternoon of mindless action, and I got that here too. Only I couldn't really laugh at the humor anymore.

Not that I found part 1 funnier, but the dialogues in the first half hour of this film were a lot sharper than the 2 hours that follow. Bay makes his action film, which is so simple, very long. 147 minutes is a decent sit and is also just too long.

Smith & Lawrence are a great duo, but very often I couldn't laugh at them in the last 120 minutes. The action may well be there and may be bombastic again with a lot of explosions towards the final phase, it is all too chaotic and too busy to fully enjoy.

The camera work is sometimes quite ugly here and there, that busy and chaotic stuff adds nothing at all to a light-hearted action/comedy, and then it's all too busy to follow properly. In any case, the film is always a bit difficult to follow because of all the debris that is fired almost untraceable on the screen.

Fortunately, Bay has thought of beautiful colors and enough spectacle to at least keep you captivated. That way you get through the 147 minutes a bit easier than the average action film. Sometimes also nice and rude, but in general this is a lesser Bay for me than his general films.

Mediocre film in which two cops track down an international drug trade. A meager plot that fails to captivate. The humor is nice here and there, but often a bit on the bland side. Will Smith does okay, but Martin Lawrence a lot less. Certainly some nice action scenes, but the film goes on way too long and therefore just falls short of 3.0 stars.

While the first film was still somewhat enjoyable, there is little left of this. This is really all vintage Bay. Badly shot action, very bland mediocre humor (Lawrence really causes irritation) and at least three quarters of an hour too long. The film was hardly captivating. Visually it all still looks nice (I've come to appreciate that aspect of Bay more and more over the years) but 150 minutes of looking at beautiful pictures where the rest is not interested, that is too long. Smith is still fine but can't save the film on his own either. 1.5*.
