DiCaprio maakt jacht op Al-Qeda in volgende film

LOS ANGELES - De Amerikaanse acteur Leonardo DiCaprio zal misschien de jacht openen op een al-Qaedakopstuk in een filmversie van een roman over de strijd tegen het terrorisme, zo meldt de gespecialiseerde Hollywoodpers maandag.

Volgens het Amerikaanse filmvakblad Daily Variety onderhandelt de 32-jarige acteur over een filmrol als CIA-agent die jacht maakt op een leider van de terroristische groepering van Osama bin Laden. Het zou gaan om een filmversie van de roman "Body of lies".

De Britse regisseur Ridley Scott, onder meer bekend van "Alien" en "Gladiator", zal de roman in beeld brengen. Het script is geschreven door William Monahan, die onlangs nog een Oscar in ontvangst mocht nemen voor "The departed", waarin DiCaprio eveneens de hoofdrol vertolkte.

Eind maart gaan de opnames van "Revolutionary road" van start, waarin DiCaprio voor het eerst sinds "Titanic" weer tegenover Kate Winslet zal staan. De regie van de film is in handen van Sam Mendes, die in 2000 een Oscar ontving voor "American Beauty".

Dicaprio, die zich de laatste jaren hardnekkig probeert los te maken van zijn imago als tieneridool, jaagt op politiek getinte filmprojecten. Hij nam een rol aan in een film over het Enron-schandaal en heeft "The 11th Hour" gedraaid, een documentaire waarin hij het broeikaseffect evalueert en oplossingen aanreikt voor het herstellen van het ecosysteem.

DiCaprio is niet de eerste Hollywoodvedette die op eigen houtje in Rambostijl op zoek gaat naar de hedendaagse slechteriken. Richard Gere gaat in "Spring Break in Bosnia" bijvoorbeeld op jacht naar de Bosnisch-Servische oorlogsmisdadiger Radovan Karadzic.

Als de formule aanslaat, kan de bioscoopliefhebber zich binnenkort misschien verwachten aan een eindeloze reeks politieke fictie met bijvoorbeeld Brad Pitt versus Ahmadinejad of Matt Damon tegen Hugo Chavez.

De Amerkaanse tv-zender CBS heeft een pilot-aflevering opgenomen voor een serie genaamd ''Babylon Fields''. De serie gaat over zombies! Amber Tamblyn (''The Grudge 2'') heeft de hoofdrol te pakken. Een toeschouwer wist te te vertellen dat de zombies er uitzien zoals in ''Night Of The Living Dead'', dus mensen met wit/grijze make-up.

Spijtig. Deze regisseur kan zoveel meer dan een simpele remake maken. The Texas chainsaw massacre: The beginning is namelijk een prima horror. Jammerlijk dat ook deze regisseur zijn naam wil bevuilen doormiddel van het maken van remakes.

Milla Jovovich speelt hoofdrol in thriller Verhoeven.

Actrice Milla Jovovich gaat een hoofdrol vertolken in 'The Winter Queen', de nieuwe thriller van regisseur Paul Verhoeven. Dat heeft productiemaatschappij Seven Arts Pictures gemeld. De bedoeling is dat de opnames van de film nog dit jaar plaatsvinden. 'The Winter Queen' is een bewerking van het boek Azazel van de Russische schrijver Boris Akoenin.

Het verhaal, dat Verhoeven heeft omschreven als "Basic Instinct in 1876", handelt over een mysterieuze vrouw die al dan niet de sleutel vormt tot de ontmaskering van een internationale samenzwering. De mannelijke hoofdrolspeler, die de rol van inspecteur Fandorin gaat vertolken, is nog niet bekend. Gerard Soeteman, met wie Verhoeven onder meer Turks Fruit, Soldaat van Oranje en Zwartboek maakte, schrijft het scenario.

Actrice Milla Jovovich was eerder onder meer te zien in Return to the Blue Lagoon, de thrillers The Fifth Element en Joan of Arc van regisseur Luc Besson en de drie Resident Evil-films. The Winter Queen moet in 2008 in première gaan. (belga/hln)

- Brad Pitt gaat een rol spelen in de nieuwe film van Joel en Ethan Coen, ook wel bekend als de Coen Brothers. Dat meldt filmvakblad Hollywood Reporter. Het project, dat 'Burn after reading' heet, gaat over een CIA-agent die het schijfje kwijtraakt van het boek dat hij aan het schrijven is over zijn missies.

Eerder werd al bekend dat George Clooney in de film te zien zal zijn. Hij werkte al vaker met de broertjes Coen samen, aan 'O brother, where art thou?' en 'Intolerable cruelty'. Ook actrice Frances McDormand, die getrouwd is met Joel Coen, is al gecast. Zij speelde eerder in 'Fargo', waarvoor het filmmakersduo in 1996 een Oscar won voor beste script.

Het scenario van 'Burn after reading' is geschreven door Ethan en Joel samen, maar Joel Coen gaat de film regisseren. De opname gaan in augustus van start. Daarvoor zijn Pitt en Clooney nog samen te zien in 'Ocean's thirteen'.

'Righteous' men: De Niro, Pacino in thriller

CANNES -- Robert De Niro and Al Pacino are teaming to play New York police investigators hunting a serial killer in Jon Avnet's $60 million thriller "Righteous Kill" for Avi Lerner's Millennium Films and Emmett/Furla Films.

The independently financed feature written by Russell Gewirtz ("Inside Man", the upcoming "Labyrinth") unites the longtime friends on screen for some 90% of the film -- unlike their one shared scene in Michael Mann's "Heat" and no shared scenes in Francis Ford Coppola's "The Godfather Part II".

"You see those two icons onscreen together for virtually the whole film," Lerner said at his Festival de Cannes offices, "(something) never seen before in the history of cinema. It's one of the hardest deals we've ever done to put these two actors together."

Lerner and Randall Emmett closed negotiations on the CAA-packaged project late Thursday morning during the festival.

Regisseur Kar Wai Wong die onlangs in op het filmfestival in Cannes de nodige aandacht kreeg als "ex" jurylid met zijn nieuwste films "My Blueberry Nights" komt met een remake van Orson Welles zijn "Lady From Shanghai, The (1948).

Rachel Weisz zal de karakter "Elsa Bannister" gaan vertolken. Of zij hiermee de uitstekende acteer prestatie van Rita Hayworth zal kunnen evenaren zal in 2008 duidelijk worden wanneer de film uitkomt.

Well, it had to happen. Last week we were told that He-Man and his Masters of the Universe are to get a second bite of the movie cherry, which drove many a reader to ask, "whither the Thundercats?". To which the answer is now: coming very soon!

Warner Bros has optioned a script by new writer Paul Sopocy based on the '80s cartoon. The script, according to Variety, is an origin story chronicling Lion-O's path becoming leader of the Thundercats as well as the creation of the villainous Mumm-Ra (The evAHHHHH LIVING).

All your favourite anthropomorphic felines – Tygra, Panthro, Cheetarah – will show up. So, who should be cast as the furniture scratching warriors? We're saying Ving Rhames should be a lock for Panthro. And Snarf could be played by that tabby that belongs to Mrs Scoggins and number 23.

Now, if you're a giant fan of Wolverine or the X-Men movies (or at least the Bryan Singer ones) this story is going to make you a little sad. So in preparation for this, we suggest you watch the cute film at this link immediately after. OK, deep breaths, hold somebody's hand if they're close by or maybe just a much-loved childhood plaything. According to IESB the Wolverine spin-off movie has two possible directors.

Now, the first isn't too bad. DJ Caruso may have directed the abysmal Taking Lives, for which he'll probably spend a little bit of time in Hell, but he also made the soon-to-be-released Rear Window homage Disturbia, which is really pretty good. It's the other possible choice that bothers us. We haven't seen Die Hard 4.0 yet, so it's entirely possible that the fourth John McClane movie will represent an enormous step up from the 'oh, dear Lord, mine eyes!' quality that blighted the Underworld movies. But, right now we're scared.

What happened to getting visionary filmmakers – Christopher Nolan, Bryan Singer, Ang Lee (we're Hulk apologists) – to inject superhero movies with plenty of flash, bang and wallop, but also a little meaning? Caruso can certainly direct a story when given good material and, well, maybe Wiseman will show he can, but both are more 'Point and Shoot' directors than men who have shown that they can make this movie into a truly worthy origin story and not just a cash-in on a now defunct franchise.

So what do you think? Would you still be interested in Wolverine with Caruso or Wiseman at the helm?

Ladies and gentlemen, we suspect that this may be the best news you'll hear all day (unless you're getting married / having a baby / winning the lottery, in which case fair enough). Paul Greengrass, one of the best directors in the world today, and Matt Damon, consistently underrated star and one of the best actors around, are set to collaborate for a third glorious time on Imperial Life In the Emerald City, Greengrass' Iraq-war based drama.

The story is based on Rajiv Chandrasekaran's non-fiction account of life in Baghdad's "Green Zone", the area of the city populated by Westerners charged with making Halliburton a profi- sorry, with rebuilding the infrastructure of Iraq and bringing stability to the country. Damon will be playing a composite character incorporating elements of several real people in the book.

This will be the third time that Damon and Greengrass have worked together, following the two Bourne sequels (the latter due out in August), and apparently talks are currently being finalised with only scheduling issues left to work out.

It seems like a good fit for both - while Greengrass' fiery world views are pretty well known, Damon's quietly been building up a body of politically slanted films, with Syriana, The Good Shepherd and Team America (OK, not the latter). Fingers crossed that everyone involved can make their timetables work, because this is one bit of casting we want to see.

Captain America Movie Next From Marvel After Hulk!

This week has been a flurry of comic book movie news - Thor, Punisher 2, 30 Day of Night! And today it gets even better! Our friends over at Collider.com heard from Marvel's President of Production, Kevin Feige, that after The Incredible Hulk the next Marvel film will be Captain America! Feige spoke quite a bit about the project and the direction the film would take and that they already have a writer working on the script.

From the interview, Feige said that they don't have a director yet but that David Self is writing the script and they're hoping to get it into the pipeline within the next year. He also spoke about what they're planning to do with the project and whether it would be a period piece or not.

“Well I think we'll certainly have to play with that and play with Captain America being this patriotic propaganda machine on one hand but also being a very human Steve Rogers – interesting, fascinating hero in his own right."

So no chance of a period piece for Captain America? “Right now what we’re developing would be half and half."

Captain America is the superhero first introduced in 1941 known best by the shield he wields and his patriotic uniform. If you're a fan or just want to learn more, I suggest checking out the full quotes from Feige over at Collider.com.

Is anyone else pretty excited to see this coming together? I think Marvel's got the comic book movie genre in the bag right now, give or take DC's Batman, and their upcoming films already in production (Iron Man, Incredible Hulk) are going to be huge. This is going to be an exciting next few years for Marvel.

van nu.nl: Dries Roelvink gaat acteren

Dries Roelvink krijgt een hoofdrol in de speelfilm 'I love Dries'. Dit maakte hij dinsdag bekend in de show van Edwin Evers op Radio 538.

De volkszanger speelt zichzelf in de film, die wordt geregisseerd door Tom Six. De regisseur maakte eerder de films 'Honeyz' en 'Gay'. De opnames beginnen in augustus.

De 48-jarige Amsterdammer wordt in de film na een optreden ontvoerd door een echtpaar en meegenomen naar een caravan. De ontvoerders blijken enorme fans van de zanger. Losgeld willen ze niet, maar wel het zaad van Dries. De mannelijke helft van het paar is onvruchtbaar. Een kind van het grootste idool is de grootste wens van de twee.

Titelsong

Dries heeft nog geen idee wie zijn tegenspelers worden. Hij neemt de titelsong voor zijn rekening.

De première van de film waarin Dries debuteert is eind februari in Amsterdam. Op 28 januari geeft hij een concert in Ahoy in Rotterdam.

Is er geen manier om dit tegen te houden?

Fijn dat hij ook zelf de titelsong voor zijn rekening neemt, ik kijk er al naar uit!

O God. Captain America. Welke acteur wil nu dat belachelijke pak aantrekken??

No Country for old Men is nog niet eens uit in de Nederlandse bioscoop of de Coen broertjes komen alweer met een nieuwe film, namelijk Burn After Reading. De cast ziet er hoewel niet heel orgineel, minstens zo aantrekkelijk uit. Met acteurs als Brad Pitt, John Malkovich, George Clooney en Frances McDormand weten ze mijn interesse wel te trekken.
