Surprisingly good. "Suspense" doesn't seem like a fair criterion to me, since the film takes a completely different approach. That's like complaining that there isn't enough gore in Titanic Lumberjack Man is more of a funny, self-aware, over-the-top slasher full of 80s stereotypes and silly kills. And it actually does that very well.

The biggest problem is that the film is at least fifteen minutes too long. This kind of work really fits better at 80 minutes (90 maximum). Especially if you don't plan on giving the slasher genre a fresh twist, it is an absolute must to keep it as compact as possible. A high body count in a short running time guarantees (more) success.

Major plus points are the large amounts of gore, the imposing killer, and a number of beautiful—atmospheric—settings. Madsen wasn't great (I'd still rather see real genre actors in this kind of B-movie). Otherwise, it suffices. Fair amounts of random nudity (100% slasher material) and some juvenile antics. Certainly not a film that reinvents the genre, but if the image had been a bit grainier and had 1982 after the title.... then it would have been an entertaining cult film. As it is, according to public opinion, it is just another one of many deplorable modern slashers. 8
