Riaru Onigokko plot

"All high school girls out there. You are a little too obnoxious so we decided to reduce your numbers."

Schoolgirl Mitsuko finds herself in a world of chaos and destruction where nothing is as it seems. After a school trip by bus goes horribly wrong, Mitsuko manages to escape and runs into her classmates who are unsuspectingly on their way to school. Heartbroken Mitsuko is reassured by her best friend Aki. The two skip the first block together with Taeko and Sur, and then return in time for the second block...

Nice!

Earlier today I saw Flowers (2015), a film that rehashes its premise in a handful of rounds and then casually presents it as a punch line. Sono does something similar, but keeps the facts hidden, keeps the viewer curious and manages to be sufficiently and convincingly entertained along the way. Oh, disclaimer: otherwise the two films have nothing in common; I happened to see them on the same evening.

It is a risky game to keep the viewer guessing for so long, but Sono seems to enjoy teasingly throwing some puzzle pieces at you as a viewer. Skilled too, because the randomness can easily leave you as a viewer indifferent.

It doesn't do that at all, because in every scene you feel the urgency and sympathize with Mitsuko's confusion. Just like her, I was happy to see Aki appear every time. Moreover: four chapters (or levels) full of cartoonish blood fountains, a occasionally nightmarish soundtrack and various camera styles stimulate the senses, while you secretly continue to puzzle about the how and what.

Powerful opening scene indeed, but the practical effects when Aki's wiring is pulled out also deserve praise.

Sono #2. Unlike Tokyo Tribe and I think the rest of his oeuvre is going in many different directions, if I can believe the sounds. In any case, this was also refreshing. 4*

A crazy Japanese mixture of horror and fantasy, with a barely followable plot and lots of bloody scenes. The astonishing opening scene with a bus full of schoolgirls to whom something particularly bad happens immediately ensures that you are alert, but after that things level off considerably. There are some bizarre, ultra-violent moments here and there for the enthusiast, but the surreal atmosphere is just a bit off and the film is simply not strong enough to keep the attention constantly.

A nice Sono. Less high-quality than some of his other films, but this one is very entertaining. It starts with a great opening scene with blood spraying around. The latter is then carried throughout the entire film.

Nonsense, but entertaining nonsense in which a teenage girl ends up in some kind of fantasy universe with bizarre massacres around her where she is the direct witness in the front row. It's just a shame that the opening scene with the bus is the best scene and this highlight is hardly equaled. Although the scene at school does an incredible job.

Those dismembered bodies are nice and gross, but it never becomes gross. Actually, considering the approach and theme, it's even good. I even found it funny at times. Very nice entertainment for an evening of relaxing, but it was not exactly high quality.
