A diptych that focuses on an overworked man in the first part and a withdrawn woman in the second. Both characters are not satisfied with the life they lead. Both characters struggle.

The two parts are loosely interwoven, and it is quite nice that some supporting roles appear in both parts. Nevertheless, both parts are qualitatively and narratively quite different.

In the first part the character struggles with his psychological captivity and his desire for redemption. The despair and the struggle are fantastically depicted in a melancholic atmosphere, in good acting and in convincing dialogue.

The first part is strong and melancholic.

The second part focuses on the same theme. However, the way in which it is depicted is completely different. More metaphorical and lighter in tone. A bit Disney-like even. Endlessly fluttering scenes, in which not much actually happens. Long-winded. The deeper emotionality is missing. The second part is not strong.

The opening scenes of the film are set among passengers on Parisian public transport. In these scenes, in which the main characters have not yet been introduced, the isolation and psychological captivity of and between people is shown very clearly and grippingly.

The opening scenes are rock solid.

It can be a lot of fun when a film suddenly changes character halfway through, provided that this results in beautiful or spectacular images or developments in the future. That is not the case with this film. The plotless fluttering of the sparrow is a lot less interesting than the story of the lonely chambermaid, although that is not very exciting either. The best part of the film is the long-distance discussion between the American and his wife. But even that cannot prevent this from being a mediocre film overall.

Free as a bird. The most special thing at the end of the film was my discovery that this was not a big film, but a small charming film with a small story. But that lasts more than two hours. A film about an American businessman in a hotel in Paris and a chambermaid in that same hotel. He has had enough of his life as a successful businessman and the associated stress and his marriage is not really great either so he decides to end it and burn all his bridges behind him. And she has had enough of her life too. The logical conclusion is as you would think that they will meet and both run away. But that is too simple a thought, and that would not really be satisfying for the film as it builds up. And so there follows a quite surprising plot twist that is even very funny. And so it is ultimately a small charming film in which observation plays an important role. Not a very special film but I still watched it with great pleasure and a sympathetic feeling. And furthermore, something else strikes me in the description of this film. I see to my great surprise that Mathieu Amalric is in this film. And he is quite a favorite actor of mine, but I could not remember seeing him here at all. So what role did he have? When I look at the entire cast, it turns out that he had the role of narrator. Well, that is also possible. That is also a form of acting, isn't it?
