Went to the cinema yesterday. A really nice surprise. This movie is a lot better than the last Greek mythology based movies like Clash and Wrath of the Titans and Immortals. Dwayne Johnson looked really impressive and also has the charisma to play this part.
His team of mercenaries was also an interesting mixed bag, each with their own talent and character.
Action scenes were nicely put together, well organized.
Furthermore, I found it a relief to see big sets and location work again and not green screens everywhere like the 300 films (although I also find them very entertaining). This movie reminded me of Troy, one of my favorite movies, with big sets and beautiful locations. Troy, too, was a film that left the gods aside and gave a realistic twist to the legends. It was often the case that at that time, when the majority of the population was illiterate, all stories were told orally and eventually became quite whipped up.
Ian McShane, John Hurt, Rufus Sewell, all class actors who lifted the film. The film was also full of epic scenes such as Hercules breaking free from his shackles or pushing over a meter high statue but also had a good dose of humor. This movie is also a lot better than The Rock's previous Sword & Sandal movie. Was afraid that this one would become quite a copy of Scorpion King, but this one is an improvement in that area. The Rock has grown strongly in terms of acting talent. Also think that this is the 'definitive' Hercules movie for now. The B-movies with Reeves, Schwarzenegger or Ferrigno are nothing compared to this.
I have to see Legend Of Hercules again, although I don't expect much from it.

Really bad.

Perhaps the cinema screen has obscured it a bit, probably that the 3D has removed the sharp edges with some extra blur, but I thought it looked really ugly visually. CG is clumsy and cartoony, the backgrounds often clash with the foreground and it all looks very corny. It looked more like a well-intentioned but misdirected B-movie than a serious blockbuster project.

Story comes from a comic I think (if I have seen it correctly), the result is that you not only get Hercules, but also his posse fighting friends. That's good because that way you actually almost have a superhero movie in ancient Greece. The fact that it looks rather ridiculous is apparently not a problem.

Johnson is a big part of that, he really cuts a ridiculous figure like Hercules. It's not because of his posture, but he can't play a dent in a pack of butter yet and the decoration of the film is so lousy that he often just looks silly. That goes for the rest of the cast as well.

The story really doesn't give a fuck either, which shouldn't be so disturbing if the action had to be portrayed nicely in one way or another. But apparently that wasn't the case either. The result is an outright mess that couldn't be over soon enough. Fortunately Ratner doesn't stretch it too long, but this is yet another low point in his career. Not that he has been able to achieve many highlights, but even relatively speaking, this is just an insult to him.

1.0*

The Greek hero Hercules has been filmed countless times before. He has already been interpreted by various powerhouses. Bodybuilders such as Steve Reeves, Mark Forest and Reg Park made countless Hercules films for various Italian film studios in the 1950s and 60s. Famous bodybuilders such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno have also given shape to the mythological powerhouse. In the 1990s, Hercules was more popular than ever thanks to the TV series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys starring Kevin Sorbo and the 1997 Disney animated film Hercules.

In 2014, no less than 3 Hercules films appeared. The Legend Of Hercules with Kellan Lutz and Hercules Reborn with John Morrison are hardly worth mentioning. This version with Dwayne Johnson was made for a significantly higher budget and therefore looks a lot better than the aforementioned films. Yet this film also does not manage to rise above average and that is mainly thanks to the confused and uninspired script, which is slightly based on the comic books "Hercules: The Thracian Wars".

Dwayne Johnson has spent the necessary hours in the gym and has built some extra muscle mass on his already impressive physique, but unfortunately he can't make much of this half-baked script with few interesting characters. Hercules is just a dull pie and it is mainly the minor characters that give this film some color. Actors like John Hurt, Rufus Sewell and Ian McShane do not disappoint.

The action can go on with it, but here too too much reliance is placed on flashy tricks and fast editing and not so much on good, old-fashioned choreography. All in all, this Hercules has become a mediocre action film, which can hardly be called innovative.
