The Face of an Angel plot

"Forget the truth, find the story."

The murder of a British student in Tuscany leads to the trial and conviction of her American roommate and Italian boyfriend. The case receives a lot of publicity and thus attracts the attention of the filmmaker Thomas (Bruhl). Thomas gets the chance to write a film, ''The Face of an Angel'', based on a book by Simone Ford (Beckinsale), an American journalist who wrote about the case. Together they set off for Siena to do research for the film. Thomas recently separated from his wife and left his 9-year-old daughter in Los Angeles. As Thomas investigates the case, he gets further and further into a personal hell. When he meets British college student Melanie (Delevingne), he begins to wonder which is more important: solve an unsolvable crime and write the film, or return to his daughter.

I always find the films of director Michael Winterbottom interesting, although this time it takes some effort to stay focused. This cool drama about a director (Daniel Brühl) who wants to make a film in Tuscany based on a true murder case just won't captivate and/or get off the ground. The plot gets stuck in good intentions and it's a coming and going of half-baked developed characters. Fortunately, the cast consists largely of beautiful young women, plus the always nice Kate Beckinsale. So at least you have something as a viewer.

What a boring monotonous sitting!

The story just won't get going and the whole murder case in combination with a filmmaker and a journalist is not interesting either. Also many of the same scenes that come back: a filmmaker who of course starts drinking and taking drugs by immersing himself in the whole case, which makes it difficult for him to distinguish between fiction and non-fiction. In addition, a few very short dream sequences and online conversations with his daughter. A lot of chatter. Fortunately, Kate Beckinsale plays the journalist, she remains a beautiful woman to look at. Daniel Brühl did not convince me as the main character. I can now also remember that I watched it once, but turned it off after half an hour because I was most likely tired from the day. But now I think differently about it 3/10

Loosely adapted from the story of Meredith Kercher, the British student murdered in Perugia on 1 November 2007, and her roommate Amanda Knox and her Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito who were wrongly convicted of Kercher's death based on sloppily collected "evidence". Winterbottom focuses on the role of the media in such sensational crimes by focusing on filmmaker Thomas [Daniel Brühl] who tracks down the journalist [Kate Beckinsale] who wrote a book about the murder of Elizabeth Pryce [Sai Bennett] and wants to know more about the circumstances under which her good friend Jessica [Genevieve Gaunt] and her boyfriend Carlo [Ranieri Menicori] and bar owner Cedric [Henry Emehel Chinedua] murdered Elizabeth. A lot of ethical squabbles and other chitchat in this excruciatingly slow, disappointing crime drama that only manages to generate interest when Winterbottom reconstructs the events surrounding the murder.
