freedom of the press.

The story of Valerie Plame from the journalist's angle. And that actually produces a better film than the subject itself - as in Fair Game (2010), which I found a bit disappointing. The weakness of this film is mainly the somewhat too laboriously fictitious main motif, which for me is mainly expressed in the somewhat unsatisfactory monkey-wrapping moment at the end. Which makes me wonder whether a serious investigative journalist would speak of a 'source' in such a case.

Apart from that, the film is especially strong because of the well played roles - Beckinsale especially puts in a nice performance. And Alan Alda pleasantly surprises by bringing something after his introduction as a tailor-made suit fetishist. And Matt Dillon has such a rare moment when he shows that he really can do something - a very unsympathetic role as the driver of the government's need for revenge. Although he is still trumped by Schwimmer, who puts down a worrisomely convincing huge cock - and he does that quite often, you would almost think that that type suits him well.

Even more worrisome is the subject, of course. Even without the link to the Plame case, the whole thing is quite clear that the government is relentlessly pursuing its own revenge needs. And that's not something I would immediately dare to make an American phenomenon out of - things often go wrong with us that the government would like to keep under wraps, and we also sometimes have a journalist in jail. Read the newspaper - while the journalists are still free.

An ironclad final twist is a worthy conclusion to this psychological drama based on the account of New York Times journalist Judith Miller who in 2005 chose a prison sentence over revealing a confidential source. In this film, the journalist's name is Rachel Armstrong [Kate Beckinsale] and she reveals that teacher Erica van Doren [Vera Farmiga] is a CIA agent. Soon, Prosecutor Patton Dubuis [Matt Dillon] is diametrically opposed to her, demanding that she reveal her source, alleging treason. But for reasons that only become clear at the very end, Rachel refuses to reveal the source. Not only will that put her in jail, but her marriage to Ray [David Schwimmer], as well as her relationship with son Timmy [Preston Bailey], will come under a lot of pressure.

Beckinsale is outstanding in one of the best roles she's ever had. The same goes for Dillon, who also lands his best roles in many years. Farmiga, but also Alan Alda and Courtney B Vance deliver craftsmanship in their roles and a special mention goes to Floyd Abrams in the role of the judge. He was Miller's attorney in the lawsuit on which this film is based.

“I know you can't tell me who your source is. I respect that, okay? I know about keeping secrets.”

Excellent movie. I always appreciate films about journalists doing their job trying to find out the truth (or in this case, protecting the truth), and Nothing but the Truth is another expertly made journalist film. Beckinsale, Dillon and the other actors do well, and director Rod Lurie manages to keep the suspense all the way to the end. No mean feat in a film in which there is a lot of talking and the tension mainly has to come from the sometimes razor-sharp dialogues and the acting.
