Very nice film in which a legend is created of someone who never existed, where the sparingly used mockumentary form works well (by the way a small obsession of Allen, that mockumentary: Take the Money and Run, Zelig, Husbands and Wives). There are much funnier films by Allen and only a few jokes made me laugh, but the whole thing works mostly as a character study of a very annoying, but interesting little man who only becomes tolerant when he makes music. Would that have appealed to Allen, an artist easy to criticize as a person, but brilliant as an artist (in the 1990s, some of Allen's films were overshadowed by his private scandals)? Maybe I see too much behind it. Either way, Penn is playing the part of his life. Morton is also very strong, but I only learned later that she was inspired by Gelsomina from La Strada. I was actually stupid that I didn't notice, since I did make the link between La Strada and Sweet and Lowdown at the end. Personally, Morton always reminded me of Harpo Marx, same facial expression. No one here plays the typical Woody-Allen character, by the way. Besides the actors and the usual good script, the nice 1930s atmosphere also stands out.
4*

Nice film about one of the best jazz guitarists in the world during the 1930s. The film looks like a biopic/mockumentary. A bit fragmentary (anecdotes from the life of the guitarist). The scenes are nice, but it doesn't really want to be funny. Sean Penn plays an entertaining role as the self-righteous artist with a big ego.

Rarely has Woody Allen's love for jazzy evergreens been better expressed than in this film, which may not be his very best, yet again demonstrates careful filmmaking, originality, the necessary mischievous humor and boasts the brilliant act of Sean Penn.

It is a typical Allen product that is easy to watch because that Emmett figure is a very unpredictable and surprisingly striking character, the atmospheric (musical) scenes and romantic (?) moments follow each other fluently and the acting convinces, with besides Penn, also Uma Thurman and Samantha Morton (mainly).
