Good thriller from Chabrol, which starts off strong but slowly fades away!
Michel Duchaussoy is good as the father searching for his son's murderer and Jean Yanne is in good form as the blunt man who has the murder on his conscience.
From Chabrol's middle period, this is certainly one of his best, but doesn't come close to his early (nouvelle vague) period!

3.5*

The tenth Chabrol film I saw and I thought it was the best.

I've always had some difficulty with Chabrol's style: always a bit choked up, often absurd and with too many coincidences in the story that sometimes border on the unbelievable.

This is also the case with "Que la bête meure," especially in the first section, where the main character quickly gets back on track. After that, the film becomes a thriller, with surprising twists and an excellent performance by Jean Yanne.

A good French-style revenge film. One with plenty of adultery and more than enough dialogue. It's also a time capsule of what life was like in the late 1960s. Although that's not a merit in itself, of course. Good acting and a compelling plot that manages to mislead. Varied locations with beautiful camerawork. A very successful film.
