"It Bristles With Violence!"
Befriended burglars decide to hide the loot from a burglary until the crime is forgotten. The girlfriend of one of them betrays the secret to another mobster who kidnaps one of the burglars and demands the loot from the other as a ransom.

The French filmmaker Jacques Becker had the misfortune that his artistic heyday lay in the fifties, as a result of which history has more or less forgotten him, blown away by the up-and-coming nouvelle vague of Varda, Godard, Resnais and Truffaut.
Unjustly, because although Becker seems like a traditional director, his editing technique and his minimalist narrative style still feel modern. 'Touchez Pas Au Grisbi' is a crime film from 1954, directed by Jean Gabin, whose story lasts only three days, but in which the characters of the star ensemble (in addition to Gabin, also Lino Ventura and Jeanne Moreau) come to the fore.

Fine picture, although nothing earth-shattering. Gabin is the classy criminal, even reminded me a bit of De Niro in Heat. The pace is pleasant and the film is not over the top. Perhaps its greatest asset is the 1950s setting, including variety shows, cars and furnishings. I did not recognize Jeanne Moreau, unfortunately.

I have little to criticize about this film, except that despite the short length, the film sometimes started to drag and did not keep me constantly fascinated (which was probably due to the late evening and I was also tired). Somehow strange, because this is a strong film on points. Good atmosphere, in photography but also locations such as the many bars and telephone booths. Furthermore, a nice leading role by someone who is completely in control and remains calm; a role that somewhat reminded me of Philip Baker Hall in PTA's Hard Eight. And the plot is quite captivating. But most of all: the film feels like something I don't see very often. Banal details such as putting on pajamas, but also brushing your teeth before that. All this gives this film that little bit special. And now that I go through all the points, this is still a good film, even though I was a bit restless watching it. 4.0.
