I Clowns plot
Fellini first saw circus clowns in 1925 and that traumatic experience (he found them terrifying) inspired him to make this documentary at a time when the circus's survival is under threat. He asks old clowns or clowns from old families about their memories and experiences. The almost completely re-enacted report gives Fellini the opportunity to give free rein to his image fantasy without having to tell a pretentious story.
