A very good film noir that's on par with your average Hitchcock classic. The story was simple yet brilliant, set largely in a single location: a train. A police officer, Walter Brown, is responsible for protecting a key witness in the mafia case and must transport her by train from Chicago to Illinois. He must also ensure the woman isn't shot by one of the mafiosi on board. The story was quite skillfully filmed, considering the challenges posed by such a cramped, confined location. The same can be said of the performances by, among others, David Clarke, who also had (small) roles in other good noirs like The Set-up and The Asphalt Jungle, Charles McGraw (as Charles Brown), and Jacqueline White (as Ann Sinclair). And of course, the film had a surprising plot twist towards the end.

Much better than the remake with gene.

This original is also different from the remake.

But I also think the actors are very good.

The Narrow Margin follows Detective Brown as she spends the entire film trying to protect a witness, mafia widow Mrs. Neall, during a long, long train journey. It's a typical noir: lots of gangsters, violence, untrustworthy people (though in this case, not the good guys), and of course, plenty of suspense and multiple plot twists. Not all of which are equally believable, but whatever. It's mostly easy to watch; it's a fairly short 71 minutes with plenty of suspenseful moments and excellent acting. Nicely done, even if it is a textbook noir.
