“My Six Convicts” is an interesting comedy-drama about one of the first psychologists to work in a prison. John Beal plays Doc, who is given a six-month trial period to see if he can accurately test the prisoners’ IQ and study their backgrounds. This was part of an idea he had to investigate whether it would make sense to employ such professionals in prisons in the future. Doc’s biggest challenge is winning the prisoners’ trust.

After some scheming by a few prisoners and after Doc emphasizes the benefits of lighter work to him, half a dozen men come to their senses. They agree to work for him and are the first to take his tests. Millard Mitchell plays James Connie, who secretly leads Doc and the prisoners to a successful outcome. Mitchell delivers a magnificent performance and received a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in 1952. Other prominent actors among the prisoners include Gilbert Roland as Punch Pinero, Harry Morgan as Dawson, Marshall Thompson as Blivens Scott, and Jay Adler as Steve Kopac.

The film is a fictional adaptation of a true story. An attempted prison escape, murder, and suicide do not appear in the book. The source is an autobiographical book from 1951 by Donald Powell Wilson, “My Six Convicts: A Psychologist's Three Years in Fort Leavenworth.” Although Fort Leavenworth is a federal prison in Kansas, the setting and story of this film take place in San Quentin, a state prison in Northern California.

In my opinion, the film tries to be sincere, but romanticization definitely becomes a factor as the story develops further. That being said, it is otherwise a fine film where the sharpest edges have been polished off a bit and there is also room for a little humor.
