Porthmouth, 1759. Young Langdon Towne drops out of college at Harvard to become a painter. When Towne gets into trouble with the British colonial rulers, he flees into the woods with his friend 'Hunk' Marriner. There they meet Commander Rogers, who leads the Rangers on a punitive expedition against a notorious Native American tribe. Rogers persuades Towne and Marriner to accompany the expedition. It's going to be a tough journey...
