What is it about book adaptations that they feel like static, explanatory summaries of the original source material!? 'Life of Pi' (2012) relies on the bombastic CGI spectacle that brings the images from the book to life. Furthermore, Ang Lee comes up with too few ingenious inventions to do justice to the plot that is difficult to film. The passages with the older Pi and the novelist, for example, are cringe-inducing: mediocre and uninteresting. The first childhood memories up to the eventual shipwreck are a weak succession of clichés about meaning and the search for religious meanings. Very forced and sentimental, and every cliché about India is pulled out to continue to satisfy the oriental desires.

Only when Pi falls victim to the shipwreck does the film finally come to life with some haunting visual finds. The heart of the film is the groundbreaking computer animation. From the hairs on the mammals Richard Parker, the zebra, the hyena and the orangutan, to the beautiful atmospheric shots of a slender boy who sees the starry sky reflected in the ocean surface. Yet even those passages lack the nuance and tranquility to get more out of it than has happened now. Or the annoying voice-over chirps in the background how to read every emotion or psychological development. Or unbelievable amounts of animals are thrown onto the screen to keep the action going.

Despite the groundbreaking computer animation, the film remains on the plain because of the easy-going formula work in which the whole is cast. Ang Lee could have shown more daring rather than a lavish, kitschy deluge of impressions; like it's the same rollercoaster ride as every major blockbuster of the last 10 years.

It's the second time I've seen this movie and I still feel like I don't care much for this movie. The first part of the film up to the shipwreck is very long-winded and gives little added value to the film. Perhaps it would have been better to start immediately with the boat trip and to provide information about the why of the trip with short relevant flashbacks etc ...

From the shipwreck, the film really starts with Pi and 4 remaining beasts of which the tiger eventually remains. Visually the film is great, but a film needs more than visual effects. The voice-over is sometimes too strong. Imagine that Cast Away with Tom Hanks was full of his voice-over. To get mad at. Sometimes you have to let your eyes and your interpretation do the work...

The idea that both stories are metaphors is an interesting fact. I feel that the film balances too much between 'magic' on the one hand and 'fantasy' on the other which ultimately leans towards unrealistic. The acting was fine and the relationship between Pi and the tiger was not too corny and well built up.

In short, a decent film, not a masterpiece, but more than expected. Therefore a pass with 3.0*.

What a movie! This genre doesn't really appeal to me, but I'm glad I was tempted to watch it anyway. Beautifully done. As the film progresses it really pulls you into the whole story. I get really emotional about it. Great music too, the 3D animation is very well done, nice story. Top movie!
