One of the better found footage films and also one of the few science fiction films of recent years in which science really plays an important role. Initially, this film mainly caught my attention because of the fact that the phenomenal Sharlto Copley was announced, but the film gripped me much more because of the strong suspense, the mystery and the fact that the whole film comes across so damn realistic when it comes to the characters' actions and reactions.

It should be clear that Europa Report is a film that will be a success, especially among critics, but will not do well among standard film audiences. The tension is too subtle for that, the monster is too little in the picture, there is no gore or blood and in general there is too little really big happening to hold the attention in such a way. However, because Europa Report responds to ideas and developments within space that we can take into account that they will never really happen, we are dealing with a film that can be called important for the science fiction genre, as well as for NASA/space itself. .

It's also nice that for a found footage film it's all very well portrayed, that also increases the tension quite a bit, just as the film becomes extra realistic in the same way due to the excellent acting. This movie isn't for everyone, but it sure is good.

Nice.

I'm really happy with the sci-fi revival. The only regret is that the most interesting films are clearly in the low-budget category, where the blockbusters often look better, but are crudely and blandly developed.

Europa Report is a film that remains very small. With an interesting international cast (Copley, Nyqvist and to my surprise Daniel Wu), a limited space and some cleverly used CG you feel like you are further from Earth than anyone has ever been. I especially liked the use of CG. Nothing spectacular is done with it, but it is super effective. The adventurous character of this film certainly does well.

Sometimes there are some scenes that feel a bit too tried and true, like struggling with isolation in the beginning of the film (even feared it would just turn out like that), also the death of Copley feels a bit redundant though that's mainly because the main storyline is quite powerful.

Nice build-up to the end too, not very original in the end, but for that it is a self-conscious genre film. I had a lot of fun with this, they can make a few more in the coming years.

3.5*

SF thriller has too many emphatic similarities with Alien (the crew composition, a female survivor, not to mention a scene where the crew members eat together) to be labeled as original. The film consists of recordings made during a space expedition to Europa, one of the moons of Jupiter, and immediately shows in broad terms how it ends. A scientist on Earth puts the video footage into a scientific context in an attempt to explain what happened. Screenwriter Philip Gelatt consulted NASA to ensure the story was scientifically correct. The makers could have better spent that time and the associated budget on a better cast, because the performances are very flat across the board. The special effects are also below average.
