"The power of love vs. the love of power."
Max Hoover leads the dreaded Hat Squad, a group of independent LAPD police detectives. Along with this squad, Hoover is more feared than the mafia. When Hoover's former mistress, Allison, is murdered, everything changes. The secret meetings turn out to be taped and that poses a major threat to Hoover's married life. But there's more: He learns that his mistress's death is just one part of a conspiracy that stretches from the White House to a nuclear testing zone in the desert. Hoover and his squad face the darkest and most corrupt side of the FBI and politics.

Nice film noir with an always nice role of Nolte. The rest of the cast however disappoints and also has no depth at all, which makes some events do nothing for the viewer; only Nolte is interesting. The story is standard and does not remain standing completely towards the end, still worth it because of Nolte and the great atmosphere.

I am a big fan of the noir genre. The music is great, the sets are perfect and the actors are fantastically cast. Unfortunately there is little tension in the film and there are too many scenes and dialogues are just very mediocre. Eternal shame because this had everything to become a classic. Bad direction.

Nice film in which a number of detectives investigate the death of a young woman who shared a bed with one of them. Perhaps not the most original or surprising plot, but reasonably entertaining. However, it could have been worked out a bit better (especially the whole settlement). A nice 50s setting and a cast with only famous names.
