The Man Who Never Was plot

"The most fiendish plot ever conceived! The most amazing "human being" ever created! The most diabolical phantom--"

The film tells the story of a British attempt to trick the Germans into believing that the Allied invasion in 1943 would not take place in Sicily, but in Greece. This is still a lot of work to do. Based on a true story.

Based on true events and filmed skillfully and smoothly.

Fascinating and also somewhat thriller-like to follow and populated with a bunch of good actors: Clifton Webb seems aristocratic and British, Stephen Boyd (in his early film years) is good in the skin of a German spy and the "girls" Gloria Grahame (quite vampy appearance) and Josephine Josephine Griffin play well.

Good structure and demanding attention from the start. I remember seeing the movie many years ago.

Great story, well constructed - what more could you want? In real life, there was no German spy involved in backtracking to see if it was real. Why not? Read Wikipedia. The British had a close eye on the intelligence network of the Germans in the UK. But the screenwriter (who received a BAFTA for it in 1956) thought that something like this could have happened added to the tension. Lead actor Clifton Webb was already well into his 60s in the film (not visible, by the way). Came across as British as could be; in reality he was American by birth.

One of the films from the 1950s that heralded the boom in exciting war and spy films in the 1960s. There is even a kind of laboratory department within the British army, which looks a bit like the team around Q from the James Bond films. In that respect, it is very nice to read that Ian Fleming was actually involved in the operation shown in real life.
So in the field of espionage, it's perfectly fine. However, the whole thing remains somewhat distant; the film would have benefited from a little more drama and action.
