When Cal Weaver (Steve Carell) finds out that his wife Emily (Julianne Moore) has cheated on him and wants a divorce, his "perfect" life collapses like a house of cards. Cal spends his free evenings sulking and alone at the bar, until player Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling) takes him under his wing. To help him get over his heartbreak, Jacob introduces Cal to the world of single women, tough drinks, and a new style of clothing that can't be found at the decent department stores. Meanwhile, his kids struggle with their own love affairs and Cal learns that you can give your looks a makeover, but not your heart...

Wonderful comedy with serious undertones about the folly of love and infatuation where reason is often hard to find. And at the same time the forced way to find the right one. And yes, of course the smooth boy falls for true love. And old love doesn't rust. Fortunately, the tone remains light-hearted. And yes, that Gosling has a beautiful body. And a fantastic cast.

A very nice feel-good film, which manages to find a good balance between the comical and the more serious aspects. I had expected more of a full-blooded comedy in advance, but the film does not shy away from addressing more serious matters about love, infatuation and relationships. Although the smile is never far away, thankfully. With a running time of two hours, Crazy, Stupid, Love is quite long, especially for a film of this genre. However, it didn't feel that way at all; enough characters and stories are followed to justify such a playing time. That doesn't automatically mean that all characters and storylines are equally engaging, but in general none were annoying to follow. For example, I sometimes found the roles of Julianne Moore and Kevin Bacon, or the son, a bit too much time. Very nice are Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. Mainly Carell is a comic tour de force; especially in the first hour when he still behaves awkwardly. Gosling has remarkably nice chemistry with both Carell and Stone, but is also funny at times. Although that wasn't a big surprise after seeing The Nice Guys. Everything swirls together wonderfully funny and absurd in the garden scene half an hour before the end; cliché, but the highlight of the film. And well, that cliché is of course part of these kinds of films, so I didn't really bother with that. The film even handles this quite cleverly, and manages to end with a nice form of bitter sweetness, instead of an unbelievably 100% happy ending. 3.5*.

This was actually not so bad (given my natural skepticism about rom-coms). Fresh, funny, and the romance/drama is palatable and realistic enough, probably because it plays explicitly with all kinds of clichés. The style and humor of Steve Carell fits well here. Gosling's character is of course much too stereotypical, but that can be forgiven by the humorous approach. So nice viewer. And Marisa Tomei.
