It's amazing that words written more than four centuries ago can still move us today. Even during an escalating argument, the characters continue to speak in iambic pentameter. That's unnatural, but it works. Fortunately, Zeffirelli has stuck to the original text. There are beautiful quotes in it, e.g. My bounty is as boundless as the sea.

Giving two teenagers the lead roles was a risk, but it paid off. Olivia Hussey radiates youthful romance, with that rare combination of dark hair and bright blue eyes - two of the fairest stars in all the heaven. Of the secondary roles, Milo O'Shea (Friar Laurence) and Pat Heywood (Nurse) stood out. Laurence Olivier's aristocratic accent can be heard in the prologue and as the dubbed voice of Lord Montague.

Thanks to its romanticism, this is Shakespeare's most accessible play. This version never gets too dramatic. The balcony scene in particular is very memorable, even with Romeo walking euphorically downhill through the bushes immediately afterwards. The feud between the two families doesn't seem too serious at first. Only when deaths occur does the gap become unbridgeable and love impossible. Nino Rota's music uses medieval sounds and rhythms.

The well-known story, visually beautifully presented in a beautiful mise-en scene and very enjoyable music.

The acting was okay, but a lot of sword work. I thought for a moment, are we now at Dumas or at Shakespeare. Incidentally, not that important.

Excellent film in which a boy and a girl fall in love. The famous, tragic love story of William Shakespeare. It always takes me a while to get into the flow of his lyrics. Beautiful costumes, locations and music. The casting is also good. A narrow 4.0 stars, but the version by Baz Luhrmann remains my favorite.
