"The Gods need a hero."
The bloodthirsty king Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) leaves a trail of destruction in ancient Greece with his army. Hyperion is looking for the Arch of Epirus. With it, he wants to overthrow the Gods of Olympus and crown himself ruler of the world. A mortal chosen by Zeus (Luke Evans), Theseus (Henry Cavill), must lead the fight against Hyperion. With the help of the oracle Phaedra (Freida Pinto), the young warrior gathers enough men to take on the treacherous king and his army.

This movie is similar in style to 300 which I personally like. So fights with a lot of slow motion, blood and a well-developed choreography. Also a lot of attention was paid to the decoration, so beautiful landscapes that are often digitally edited and beautiful costumes (especially of the character Hyperion). Also a lot of fantasy with magical weapons and characters.
I thought the acting was mediocre - I didn't think I knew the main character, but I didn't think he was bad. Rourke was the best and I think the most famous actor of the cast.
I didn't like the story and its execution. The story is predictable and too easily worked out. It all feels very standard and cliche (eg the scene where the main character finds a magic bow is really really bad). Because of this and because of the mediocre acting, you feel that this is actually a B movie, a good B movie in my opinion.
With the benefit of the doubt 3.5 stars instead of 3.

This film wants to follow in the footsteps of films like '300' and 'Clash of the Titans', but chokes on this ambition. Director Tarsem Singh does not know how to make a consistent whole from the many - nevertheless - beautiful images and/or scenes. Also protagonist Henry Cavill weighs a little too lightly in this role to be able to compete with Mickey Rourke, for example. The end result is a snack.

Nice film about a king who wants to get hold of a weapon that can destroy humanity. The story takes a while to get going, but it's still entertaining after that. Unfortunately, it remains somewhat superficial with regard to Greek mythology. The film does look beautiful (beautiful costumes and CGI sets, clearly in the style of Tarsem Singh's earlier films). A bloody and action-packed finale. Just not 3.5 stars.
