Based on a play by Victor Hugo, this fun, burlesque, vaudeville comedy and for fans of the Funès crowd is certainly a hit and actually not that bad either.

Yves Montand easily joins in the fuss.

Wonderful comedy with and thanks to Louis de Funès. This time a period piece that seems to be set in Spain somewhere in the 16th or 17th century. Louis de Funès is his usual slightly offended self in the role of a nobleman with ambition. The rest of the cast is also good. The plot is well constructed, with sharp dialogues and funny situations. The socially critical undertone in which the wealthy are put to shame never feels forced. All of this is beautifully portrayed, with attention to historical costumes and sets. Finally, the score by Michel Polnareff is a pleasure. The opening and certain sound designs seem to be inspired by Morricone westerns, but otherwise I think that Polnareff's own pop-sensitive style resonates. Perhaps the use of drums and such feels a bit strangely anachronistic in this period comedy, just as you would expect the Morricone guitars in a western (although the opening does resemble a western).

Comic reworking of the play Ruy Blas by Victor Hugo, set in Spain at the end of the 17th century. A tax collector falls into disgrace at the Spanish court and swears revenge on the German-speaking queen, and now devises a plan to disgrace her with her husband, since she is not insensitive to a slip-up. To do this, he will use his own valet, Blas, who is a secret admirer.

For me one of the best films with De Funès, in the top 3 together with La Grande Vadrouille and Le Corniaud. Think this is the fifth or sixth time I see it. Always the same amount of laughter.

Here you see De Funès at the height of his powers. I almost saw the dialogues and situations in comic strip form before my eyes. Wonderful acting, a good pace and clever timing in the scenes make this an irresistible comedy with spaghetti-western accents.
