It looks beautiful, everyone does their best, there is a lot of talent in the lead and supporting roles, and Isla Fisher is a stunning sight, but somehow the film never becomes as comedic or as macabre as I had hoped, despite the presence of favorite Simon Pegg. The reasonably surprising ending earns the film an extra half star.

Of all the films with Pegg that I have seen, this is by far the least funny and most sleep-inducing—and that proved to be true in practice, because I actually did fall asleep halfway through. I did fast-forward through the missed half, but I hardly found that worth the effort. The picture looks very polished, it must be said.

It proves once again just how badly directors can miss the mark with black comedy. Something isn't automatically funny just because it's nasty or mean; instead, you have to earn the bursts of laughter with a build-up that strikes the right balance between malice and evoking sympathy for the characters. The meanness isn't an end in itself. Burke & Hare is more laugh-out-loud slapstick than a macabre horror comedy. The result is that the nasty moments (cutting open corpses, grave robbing, murders, and executions) feel out of place within the farcical tone. Towards the end, it even takes an unexpectedly nasty turn. That wouldn't be so bad in itself if the build-up to that dark finale was logically constructed, but due to the overly complicated plot, it remains a chaotic mess. What remains is a production that looks like it actually had the potential to be an entertaining film.
