Tamara Drewe is an adaptation of Posy Simmonds' graphic novel of the same name, which in turn is loosely based on Thomas Hardy's Far from the Madding Crowd. It is set in the English countryside against the changing seasons. Summer clothes are exchanged for winter coats and scarves. We see autumn leaves, bare branches, rain and wind, but unfortunately no snow.

Higher and lower forms of literature are a theme. Bestselling author Nicholas has already thrown out a sneer at the intellectual Glen. Tamara herself is a columnist who throws her own and other people's private lives at risk. When it comes to love, she must choose between two successful but unreliable men and her childhood friend and gardener Andy. The funniest side character is the teenage Jody, who wants to escape the dullness of rural life. In the graphic novel she dies from inhaling computer cleaner, but here they've narrowed it down to one death. The scene where Nicholas is run over by those cows looks realistic.

The general tone is light-hearted with some sombre elements, a real tragicomedy. Alexandre Desplat's music underlines this.

Actually only recorded and started because of Gemma Arterton and the fact that this film features the famous scene with the red top and the hot pants. But in the end still quite surprised by an occasionally funny film.

Ewedown, a sleeping hamlet in the making where writers wallow in tranquility and the youth can think of no better entertainment than throwing eggs at passing cars. But soon after Tamara arrives, Ewedown turns out to be a typical microcosm. Anger, jealousy, craving, unrequited love, adultery, reunion, even death passes by and a rock star who not only drives the village but also the local youth crazy... boring, such a village. In any case, the beautiful surroundings stand out and Tamara Drewe has a damn beautiful house and then there is of course the well-known scene where Arterton climbs over the fence and walks over to the others in her hot pants, annoying to hear such a neighbor.

But Tamara Drewe offers something more, because unlike before with noses, the gentlemen are now suddenly all interested, talking about superficially. Then of course there is the humor, all the jealousy and some nice wtf moments that make the film worth watching. Because where is all the turmoil leading now and what does Tamara herself want...? The signing moment of Nicholas in the parking lot is precious. Also funny the empty-headed and tasteless drummer Ben. Nice to say the least the role of young Jessica Barden as an observed fan.

And with that, Tamara Drewe has a bit of everything and is pretty okay for once.

At times quite funny, and at times also quite poignant. At other times, I felt like the plot was a bit out of control, as if the creators thought it was enough to put a few quaint characters together and see what came of it, and then mix it up with a few other loose ones. ends (Tamara's incomprehensible choice of bed partners, the lesbian writer from the beginning who suddenly disappears from the film) makes for a film whose concept seemed to me to promise more than it came out on balance.
