Beautiful drama about a young girl who has to deal with her parents' divorce. Initially everything seems to be going smoothly, but soon cracks become visible.

The film follows the girl's perspective and is a social drama for a long time, with beautiful, physical acting and a fresh approach that you can call typically Japanese. Gradually, however, Somai becomes less and less interested in realism and gives a Buddhist twist that reminded me of the novels of Banana Yoshimoto. It may be a bit sweet, but I found the highlight of her journey through nature, the scene on the water, very moving.

The film also has beautiful things to offer visually. What keeps me from giving a higher score is that I thought the film was a bit too long and I am also not happy with the use of a Western, orchestral soundtrack, especially in the last part of the film where an abstract, Eastern soundtrack is not included. would have played on sentiment..

The film is simple in its design: a cheerful girl suffers from the fact that her parents are divorced but she learns to accept it after some rebellious behavior which means she has to grow up a bit quickly. The effect is strikingly complex but certainly also beautiful and contains a lot of symbolism: the film takes its time and lasts a long time - every time you think that the end credits can come and then a new scene will appear - but it also becomes visually more and more beautiful, with the moves to a surreal ending.

A Japanese gem about a divorce in which the young child Renko absolutely does not like this. A beautifully subdued drama with an excellent performance by little Tomoko Tobata. Disarming and sweet. A bit quirky, but also quite funny and witty.

A number of fascinating scenes are discussed: the bond with the father is strongly emphasized. The relationship with the mother is above all more practical. That new household schedule, for example, is something she experiences that was shoved down her throat. It becomes striking when she locks herself up. The parents' subsequent argument is exasperating. As an ex, you just have to put up with your ex-husband's new girlfriend, put him down...

Fortunately, the emphasis was not on arguing and the focus was entirely on Renko. Great camera work with a lot of attention to the environment, the city and nature.
