Scorsese's reconstruction of a crime wave in which mainly Osaga women are killed. From the start it is clear that William Hale [Robert De Niro] is the kingpin and that he is only concerned with the oil rights, which according to law pass to the immediate family. Ernest Burkhart [Leonardo DiCaprio] is a cousin of William Hale who claims to be in love with 'the thoroughbred' Mollie, but then literally kills dead bodies for the oil rights and money. It was clear to me within a few minutes what was going to happen, but that didn't stop Scorsese from taking 2½ hours. Predictable, but thanks in part to strong supporting roles from Ty Mitchell as a shabby mercenary and Cara Jade Myers as Mollie's loose sister Anna and the good camera work of Rodrigo Prieto, it is not boring. A ridiculously overacting DiCaprio cuts a mud figure in a role that would undoubtedly have been better in the hands of Plemons (who now only appears in the final hour as FBI agent Tom White). Fortunately, De Niro is excellent as the master manipulator who hides his devilish plans behind a strong dose of outward charisma, but as soon as Brendan Fraser (also lousy) and John Lithgow appear as lawyers, it collapses like a house of cards. It then seems to take an eternity before we arrive at the ironic epilogue that ends with a cameo by a visibly emotional Scorsese.

Stylish adaptation of the book of the same name about the controversial 'Osage Indian murders'. Fueled by greed, hypocrisy and racism, the rotten side of the American Dream is exemplary depicted. Everything moves at an excruciatingly slow pace with a somewhat anticlimactic ending. As a result, Killings of the Flower Moon is fortunately not ruined, because even a lesser Scorsese still rises above mediocrity.

3.5 * Characterful but slow tragedy

Faint.

Martin Scorsese's moody cameo at the end shows it: this is a project that must be close to his heart. And it must be said; those murders - a kind of mini-genocide - appeal to the imagination. In the sense that it is too crazy for words how all that could have happened. It is a piece of "Indian history" that is not often discussed.

But it doesn't make for a good movie by any means. A puffy Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro perform poorly in the leading roles and turn it into a caricature. In this way, the manipulative side of certain characters does not come to the fore and, even worse, the drama can barely have an impact.

It is unfortunate that the murders happen every now and then, of characters you have no connection with - because they barely have any screen time. I have read that the focus would be more on the Osage after the rewrite of the film, but I don't think there is much to that. The only Osage who is featured is Mollie, who has been ill for 2 hours.

No, Scorsese can and must do better than this visually anonymous disappointment. Apart from his own cameo, you don't recognize a passion project in this at all. DiCaprio and De Niro in overacting seriously kill the film. I didn't have any trouble with the playing time, but I did with what it delivers.
