David Lynch is someone who chooses his words carefully. In this documentary, this results in a fascinating, but also a somewhat slow story. While chain-smoking in a sound studio, Lynch talks about his childhood, how he was fond of drawing from an early age, how his mother stimulated his creativity and how he eventually made the choice to live completely for art. The three (!) directors do not show us Lynch talking, but link Lynch's stories via montage to a wide selection of the visual works of art he made. We also see him at work in his studio at home and with his youngest daughter. The result is a must for Lynch fans, but unfortunately it ends with Eraserhead. Given Lynch's outspoken fascination with "moving paintings" and the obvious links between his childhood memories and films he later made (the opening of "Blue Velvet", the white lines on the highway in "Lost Highway", the appearance of Ronette Pulaski in 'Twin Peaks', the Cowboy in 'Mulholland Drive') that is really a loss. A film by David Lynch is in fact also a collage of visual works of art and for the fan it was certainly worthwhile to let this intriguing and influential director speak about this as well. Reasons enough for a sequel, because this documentary does not do justice to his extensive oeuvre as a visual artist.

More a portrait of Lynch as an artist than as a director; only his short films The Alphabet and The Grandmother are featured and the documentary ends with the making of Eraserhead. Nevertheless worth it; Lynch is always a joy to watch and listen to, and his childhood memories are delightfully bizarre at times. The documentary is also beautifully designed, with a lot of attention for Lynch's artwork and photography. But now I would also like to see a documentary about his films...
