Sonic Outlaws plot

In the early nineties, 'sampling' (using pieces of existing music in your own songs) became indispensable in the music world. Negativland was a band under contract to the highly independent SST label, which made extensive use of such, strictly speaking, illegal samples. One of those samples was from U2 ('I still haven't found what I'm looking for') and in no time the band had a lawsuit going on. However, in this lawsuit, U2's credibility was seriously jeopardized, while Negativland made a statement defending the use of the sample with so-called 'fair use'. This documentary is mainly about this case, but also about other bands and filmmakers who work in the creative twilight zones of the business and dare to fight against the big boys of the music and film industry.
