"Starrett's a two-gun terror! Smiley's a hit tune riot!"
Steve 'The Durango Kid' Downey arrives in Nugget City to investigate the murder of his brother-in-law, who owned the 'Carr' gold mine. He finds out that there is a battle going on between the ranchers and the miners. Rancher Molly Tavish warns Steve not to leave town because he will be killed by the miners. Her brothers Scotty and Tommy are in charge of a group of ranchers. Sam Ashton is in charge of the miners and he employs the outlaw Bead, who is responsible for poisoning the river, which has killed many of the ranchers' cattle. Ashton tells the rumor that Tommy Tavish killed a relative of his. Shortly afterwards, Tommy is found dead with Steve's hat next to his corpse. Steve is arrested, but, with the help of his friend and marshal Smiley Burnette, he manages to escape and he then sets out as 'The Durango Kid' in search of the real perpetrator(s).
