This is one of my favorite movies, the kind you saw on TV as a teenager and which, in retrospect, wasn't actually that good, but which you still connected with.

I actually like the music, from the same creators as the music for most Bud Spencer and Terence Hill films, I even have the CD of it.

and uh Alain Delon not enough charisma for Zorro?????

Well, Freddie Krueger is certainly too sweet a man to be in horror films?

A children's film that at times becomes too clownish with its lame slapstick and humor to be considered a "top" adaptation. Especially Sergeant Garcia, who is repeatedly humiliated by Zorro. And then there are the children who have to shout "Zorro! Zorro!" whenever he appears. The music is horribly bad and plays on repeat because the creators hadn't planned anything beyond the title song. I thought Delon was good in his triple role. First, Don Diego de la Vega, but we don't see much of the real man behind Zorro, and nothing is revealed about his background either. Then there's the dowdy governor Don Miguel, in whom Delon acts delightfully effeminate to deceive Huerta.

Finally, the screen hero Zorro, really nothing more than a Latino version of Robin Hood, with Colonel Huerta passing for the Sheriff of Nottingham and Hortensia as Lady Marian. As mentioned here, the final duel is one of the best ever in a film: very long and intense. However, you also have to consider the abrupt cartoon ending . A mediocre film, but this is the Zorro character that captivated me as a child.

On Classic Sunday, I'm going to tackle this 1975 Zorro with Alain Dellon. I mainly know Zorro from the 1990s series with Duncan Regehr and the fat, goofy sergeant who often had to provide the comic relief, and to be honest, I did watch it, but it didn't do much for me. The Zorro films with Banderas were no different, something that was disappointing at the time when they were released as over-the-top spectacle, but perhaps it will be better after the upcoming rewatch.

Anyway, Zorro 1975 with Alain Dellon, and a name like that is a good poster boy, so bring it on. And honestly, it's a bit of a struggle to get through, with a lot of lame humor and odd characters, an annoying dog, and the downright irritating character Joaquin. I can barely keep my mind on it for the first half to forty-five minutes, where only the costume with mask and the role of the people remind me what I'm looking at: the caped crusader with the capital "Z."

But right in the middle of the plot, where Don Diego pretends to be a coward to avoid being noticed—as was probably the case in the series—a rather interesting cat-and-mouse game develops between Zorro and Colonel Huerta, culminating in a comical fishing trip with all the doppelgangers to exonerate Don Diego. Furthermore, the whole thing culminates in a decent adventure with plenty of spectacle, fights, and even a real battle at the end, with death or glory between Zorro and Huerta.

It's certainly not top notch, but it recovers reasonably well after the poor opening and gets at least a passing grade.
