Used to always watch Zorro (Saturday night regular I believe). Strangely enough, I had never seen this one. I never thought it was serious enough apparently, but that's exactly why it's a relief to watch it. Nice and light, full of adventure, beautiful images, a solid plot and a stunning woman Catherine Zeta-Jones (wow). Unfortunately, they cut out a nice scene with her as she duels Matt Letscher (nice role) on the horse, in which Zeta looks even sexier in a tight nice hat. And yet I have to say that Anthony Hopkins once again steals the show. This guy can act very well.

Zorro (means Fox in Spanish) is of course a legend, but the footage was beautifully shot in Mexico. As far as possible, everything is recorded identically. Anyway, this film with sequel is well worth a pleasant viewing.

The mask of Zorro is a pure entertaining entertaining adventure/action film. A legendary hero, sort of Robin Hood in a different location, but one of flesh and blood without supersonic powers. Raised at the time with the Walt Disney version with Britt Lomond, Gene Sheldon, George J. Lewis, Guy Williams and Henry Calvin who were probably rebroadcast "FC De Kampioenen" with the regularity of the clock. Although I can also remember other series in black and white.

This movie with a top commercial cast in the lead roles is certainly a success with a high entertainment value and a story that captivates from start to finish. Also at the box office a successful film with a yield that was a multiple of the production costs. Of course the necessary clichés crop up, but you just have to take them. Set, music, acting, action and story make up for a lot.

We were nine, the last day before the Christmas break. The teacher didn't know what to do with us anymore. Somewhere, a well-thumbed video cassette of The Mask of Zorro was unearthed. We watched breathlessly. A world opened up. A world of courage, heroism and skillful sword fighting, but also a world of passionate love. For months there was a quarrel in the playground over who could be Zorro, and who would be Don Rafael and Captain Love. And which girl was Elena exactly.

But does such youthful sentiment still persist seventeen years later? For that reason, for years I refused to re-watch The Mask of Zorro, no matter how many times it was on TV. Afraid it would disappoint and a second viewing would ruin the memory. Now the time was finally ripe for it. And look, the adventure is still just as fun.

Of course you know how everything will end. Of course, there's a lot of slapstick involved in the midst of all the heroic battles. Of course it's crazy that all Mexicans speak English, old Zorro even with a flawless British accent. But what visible pleasure all the actors have in their roles, Anthony Hopkins crafty and heroic, Antonio Banderas naive but brave, Stuart Wilson and Matt Letscher (what has become of them?) wonderfully devilish, Catherine Zeta-Jones so flamboyant, seductive and fearless. And what a wonderfully immersive adventure this is still after all these years. Because deep down we all want to be a hero like Zorro.
