De Tweeling plot

After the death of their parents, the twin sisters Lotte and Anna Bamberg grow up separated. Anna stays in Germany and has to work hard for others all her life. Lotte moves to a Dutch family that offers her every opportunity at first sight. Initially, the sisters miss each other and try everything to be together again. Circumstances and the time in which they live, however, create obstacles greater than the bond they always feel. Anna marries an SS officer who is killed at the end of the war. Lotte's fiancé is murdered in Auschwitz. Fifty years after their last, painful encounter, Anna tries one last time to get in touch with her twin sister.

Quite a nice movie.

I saw this with my roommate. So I submitted this as a Dutch film (and he a Russian one, because it comes from Russia), because the film was quite well regarded and I had never seen it.

The beginning was unfortunately a bit too fragmentary for my feeling. It went from scratch and was filled with kitschy symbolism for a while to make clear the 'mysterious' bond between the twins.

The drama with the music was also a bit too much.

Fortunately after the film had been going on for a while, it ended after a somewhat subdued story. Pretty nice how the film is supported by almost only dialogue and the details that are in it (such as that one speaks German and the other Dutch).

The concept was also very strong.

The acting was also quite convincing.

Netherlands and WWII.

It is actually striking how many of these kinds of Dutch films there are, while I can't even remember a Belgian one. You would think that the two wars here would have had a slightly greater impact.

But apparently not. Unfortunately, these kinds of videos are not immediately for me. Largely set up, but therefore not very exciting and challenging. Visually it is boring solidity, the acting is rather stiff and the story is mainly predictable.

Yet it was mainly the soundtrack that managed to irritate. Very loud, omnipresent and anything but subtle. Insofar as there wasn't enough sentiment in the story already, the underlining of that by the music is simply ridiculous. A somewhat finer finish could have enhanced the story, but that was clearly not in the cards.

And that for 135 minutes ... but hey, there are worse.

1.5*
