An outsider in De Sica's work, isn't it, this stunning, imaginative film that mainly focuses on poverty, but also strongly underlines human flaws such as selfishness, greed, jealousy....

Also a lot of symbolism, like the fight for a place in the sun, and optimism (A good day doesn't need a why, but alas...)

In the middle part, the film continues to float a bit, but that is grandly compensated by a spectacular finale.

Pleasantly surprised by the originality, the cinematic inventions, the witty critique of society and the very convincing portrayal of the deepest poverty of a large group of underprivileged people.

De Sica was a communist and he subtly brings his ideological calling to the screen with this cheerful Golden Palm winner, actually a modern fairy tale. Without the fantasy elements and the comedic scenes, this was definitely a communist propaganda film. It is certainly about the class struggle between the underprivileged and the capitalists, about popular solidarity and the dream of a private utopia where the poor person lacks nothing, sung about in a catchy and almost militaristic tune that constantly returns. The very famous ending with the brooms symbolizes the flight to the "communist bloc", so to speak. It is said that that scene also inspired Spielberg for ET Is that true? Miracle in Milan is an outsider in De Sica's filmography and it also contains a lot of special effects... Nice De Sica again, although it got a bit too much for me when Toto is performing miracles with his pigeon.

The start is very fast. We are less than ten minutes away from where we need to be: Toto arrives in the homeless area next to the railway line. A funny image when the grandmother found little Toto somewhere between the (cauliflower) coals.

The movie is full of those weird funny references. It makes the film light-hearted despite the serious problems. The nice tune that is performed a number of times also fits perfectly in this list: despite the heavy message, the song is cheerful and positive in nature.

The film is a kind of fairy tale, a sweet feel good story and dreams of better times. Then I found Umberto D. and Ladri di bicicletti a lot more black. But I do understand why this film might be high in the annals of Italian cinema. That final scene with the flying bicycles is probably etched in the collective memory. Nice, although you can easily whine about it, but not this time!
