Watched this one and I liked it, although it is more for a young audience. The story is not too heavy and the atmosphere is quite cheerful with the numerous songs. The songs sound nice and the combination of animation and film is nice. The film lasts, especially for a children's film, very long (about 128min), but it didn't get boring.

The film is fun to watch, although there are of course better Disney classics.

Disney Classic #26

The 40th anniversary of Snow White apparently had to be celebrated in a big way because Disney released no fewer than three films in 1977. And with Winnie the Pooh and The Rescuers, they certainly weren't the least. Unfortunately the closing Pete's Dragon is a lot less, although it suits me better than the earlier hybrid films.

In one way or another, the whole thing comes across as sympathetic. The bad guys once again show a lot of similarities with the bad guys from Pinocchio. Yet the leader reminded me strongly of Dr. Doxey from Lucky Luke and for the wimpy follower, Stan Laurel has been taken a good look. The story starts off a bit messy, but I found the last three quarters to be satisfying.

Making the dragon invisible is a smart idea because it makes the events more surprising and the confusion in the village lasts longer. Yet of course it is also just a budget issue and the merging of Elliot with the 'real' characters was not always strong. The flying males were at times comic rather than inventive. But despite the Pippi Longstocking-esque silliness, Pete's Dragon managed to amuse me quite a bit.

2.5*

After seeing the pleasant new Pete's Dragon (2016) (4*) I was curious about this version. With the expectation based on poster and IMDb that it would be an animated film, I was treated to a live-action musical. The beginning took some getting used to, partly because of the wrong expectations, but after fifteen minutes I was in the film. I can't deny that it's pretty dated, but the songs and story (which is very different from the 2016 version) really got me. It has become a fun childhood/family film that has settled very well in the period in which it was made. 3*
