A pronounced naivety bordering on goodness, sentimental, romantic, a dash of melody and Hollywood bringing out its best sets while Mervyn Le Roy provided beautiful image compositions and all in color and you get a family film par excellence.

Moreover, the little women are not just any old ones, with "sweetheart" June Allyson in the lead role and a bunch of young stars, at the beginning of a great career, and all excellent in their roles.

Primarily for sentimental, romantic souls, but certainly not to be looked down upon.

Pure Hollywood nostalgia.

Seen many times and difficult to get on DVD, but there it was again, recently on the BBC.

As my fellow user Movsin notes below, this is a film that will make your teeth swell. I think you could write a whole essay on everything wrong with this film.

And yet, how come I walk into those fake sets again and empathize with the well-being of Meg, Amy, Beth and Jo? Simply because it is an irresistible story, and certainly one of the most charming films I know. In our "cruel" time of boorishness and IS, Little Women feels like a warm bath, and it is an excellent film to look back with some nostalgia to the times of yore, even if only for a moment. There, grandpa has spoken!!

Little Women has been filmed 7 times now and some versions rightly won awards. This is the 3rd version I saw (after 2019 and 1933) where you quickly start comparing the well-known story but especially the other actresses of the main character Jo (Katherine Hepburn in 1933 and Soairse Ronan in 2019). Of course they have the same source, but the 1949 film took over the script and music from 1933 and therefore leans closely to it. June Allyson does her best to make Hepburn forgotten. A different interpretation and almost impossible to compete with Hepbrun, but June Allyson does quite well and fits nicely in this '49 version.

The colours and setting make for a more beautiful film than in 1933, but unlike other films, the main character Jo dominates the story much more, while in other versions there was also the necessary character development. However, we also see Elizabeth Taylor and Janet Leigh at work here. Other assets, but fans of Little Women will enjoy this just as much.
