Oskar is a 12-year-old boy who is constantly teased by two bullies. One day Oskar meets his new girl next door and the two become friends. I am not ashamed of the following statement: the movie is better than the book.
I'm glad I saw the movie first and then read the book.
At first glance, according to good Scandinavian custom, the film looks icy cold. No sun. No bright colors. No, a dark, somewhat faded stage on which a sensitive horror drama is staged. The horror does not take over - there is also a lot of zooming in on the unusual friendship that develops between the two children.
(In the book it was the other way around - everything was a lot more sensational there. I prefer the feeling over the action and so I liked the movie a lot better!)

Watched it again and it still looks great. A subtle horror film that mainly has to have the atmosphere and that is great. The fact that it is Swedish is also a plus here, you are not watching Hollywood stuff and that is a relief. By the way, this youngster plays an excellent role here.

Tried it once because of the good reviews, and this was certainly not a miss, but an intriguing and distinct film.
A typical Scandinavian atmosphere is created with special characters, cruel children, curious murders and a barren climate. The protagonist and moral compass is Oskar, who does not have it easy, an image that is very familiar to me. For a moment the film seems to get bogged down in the remarkable and not really successful deeds of Hakan and the troubles of Oskar, an image that quickly seems to die a bit.
But luckily the remarkable girl quickly shows what kind of stuff she is made of and the tone of the film completely changes as far as I'm concerned. A beautiful transition is made between childish simplicity and quite gripping pseudo-horror moments that mainly revolve around the adult. The ignition in the hospital is good, the scene with the cats is simply fantastic. Oskar, on the other hand, remains a certain resting point and untouchable, except for the bullies, who are wonderfully presented with their own bill.
The title will mainly allude to the fable that a vampire cannot just enter, but must be invited. Still, it will mainly refer to the girl's own choice to let Oskar in, who ultimately saves her life. Of course that is also a kind of 'let the right one in' because the average person will want to kill a vampire anyway. The choice to leave in pairs is as logical as it is touching and predictable.
Let the right one in has to get going for me, but as soon as all the cards are on the table, a fascinating story and an interesting mix of atmosphere, horror and drama passes by in a dark and unfriendly environment. Great movie and definitely worth another viewing in the future.
