An annoying movie. The label horror is very overrated. Thriller is more obvious. Well go ahead then, thriller with some predictable horror elements.

The storyline almost exactly follows the expectation. No unexpected twists. No amazing angles. Just a straight forward course with no surprises. Full of easy stealing from other productions. And then also copied safely and not shockingly so that too high a dose of tension and shock is prevented.

Afterwards I saw the following: Rated PG-13 for violence and terror, some sexual material, underage drinking, and language. What nonsense. And if you think of horror in relation to the film, then you actually already know enough. There will be no explicit horror or other forms of explicitness. No brutal kills, no gore, no nudity. And that is correct.

Well, what's left for you then? Thrilling tension, of course. Delicious suspense. But no, the film doesn't have those things either. There is no such thing as an exciting layer in the film or even in a single scene. There is a boring run-up to the kills, which then disappoint. There are illogical choices of characters that very predictably cause bad luck. Boring. There is the bumbling of the police. There is so much and it is all annoying. It just lasts and it just lasts.

Sometimes 90 minutes feel long. That is the case in this brave and easy-going film.

hmm.

In the end I didn't think it was such a terrible film, but one that could have been much more than it is in the end. The director clearly wanted to try something out now and then, but seems to have mainly held back and that affects the result.

What is indeed a missed opportunity is that the film is a PG-13 slasher. This is all way too good, and that makes you feel a bit cheated as a viewer. This all should have been and should have been a lot coarser, harder and bloodier.

The acting is nice. Elba is always in good shape and here too he knows how to add some charm to his character. Snow has a somewhat limited role, but looks very nice. In terms of acting it's ok, it's mainly the looks.

Sometimes beautifully portrayed. The camera angles and movements are sometimes above average and fairly atmospheric, so that you do get a slightly tense moment somewhere. However, it lacks the other elements to be really exciting.

The killer in particular was a bit of a let down. Instead of a mysterious figure (so why genre: mystery) it is a rather simple figure here. A cap doesn't exactly make the killer scarier. In addition, he is not really crazy enough or or menacing enough throughout the film.

Setting is still nice, the whole party looks fine. The film is sometimes presented quite atmospheric and the acting is ok, but it's all too good and actually lacks the threat and tension that such a film should have.

Very mediocre to weak 'slasher', the whole thing all came across quite amateurish. 3/10
