Normally this is not my thing at all, I don't like these kinds of films and this style, they know how to (continue to) fascinate me. Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea did. Now I have to confess that I haven't seen many of these kind of films yet and that I need to give them a chance to really be able to judge them. After all, I also watch western animation films.

It's beautifully animated, super sweet and very cute. The story flows quietly, sometimes a little too quietly, but the beautiful images keep you satisfied. It is again a case of the battle between good and evil, but fortunately this is not the common thread of the story, it is more about Ponyo and Sosuke and this is very nicely portrayed. The substantial educational message that is conveyed is nothing new, but it does have a refreshing way of telling. In the beginning I regularly had to think of 'The Little Mermaid', which of course it is also inspired by, but given a new look.

The music is quite surreal and makes the whole thing a true fairy tale. The warm, familiar atmosphere ensures a true viewing pleasure.

Very mediocre from Miyazaki, I think his least. The story only managed to interest me moderately, the characters didn't captivate and that world in which this takes place never wanted to come to life for me. Visually sometimes nice, sometimes even beautiful (when little Sosuke enters an elderly home from the rain, it looks beautifully atmospheric inside) but often also not very special or sometimes even a bit cheap-looking (especially at sea where everything moves and the backgrounds and environment is therefore also quite bare and drawn in one color). Some small moments are still beautiful, but as a whole the film quickly bored. In a way, I also think that this film is aimed much more at children than other films, or at least that's how it felt. 1.5*.
